Helios Early Opera makes its debut with Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s grand biblical drama David et Jonathas. A tragic love story between the future king of Israel and the doomed Jonathan, son of King Saul, David et Jonathas is one of only two full-length operas by one of the most fascinating composers of the seventeenth century. Full of psychological intensity, Bretonneau’s libretto provides a gripping drama that is highlighted by Charpentier’s dazzlingly innovative and powerful score.
